Wireless Emergency Alerts: A New Nationwide Text Emergency Alert System

The key to surviving severe weather is early warning. That is why America’s wireless industry is rolling out Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), a new nationwide text emergency alert system that connects users with NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS), FEMA, the FCC, and the Department of Homeland Security.
Wireless Emergency Alerts includes Text Alerts for:

  • National Emergencies: WEA includes text alerts from NOAA’s NWS – which broadcasts severe weather warnings for situations that are expected to be dangerous to life and property, including tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, blizzards, tsunamis – as well as emergency messages sent by other authorized government alerting authorities.
  • Local Emergencies: WEA includes text alerts for local emergencies, including AMBER Alerts and Presidential Alerts.

Users will receive text alerts depending on their current location, as long as the new service is available in that area. When the phone receives a message, it will alert the user with a unique ring tone and vibration. The message will look like a text, but, unlike traditional text messages, will automatically pop up on the user’s screen.
